Surfrider Foundation Europe and ici Barbes Working to end Single Use Waste

Jul. 25, 2022

The discarding and accumulation in nature of this waste, containing extremely high levels of single-use plastic, threatens ecosystems and our health. Ultimately such pollution has a major negative impact on the oceans, the seabed and biodiversity.

This latest campaign is designed and produced by the agency ici Barbès for Surfrider Foundation Europe, and is being unveiled on July 20th, the same date as the latest revision of the Directive on packaging and packaging waste from the European Commission comes into force. This event also coincides with Plastic Free July, a global challenge to reduce daily plastic consumption.

The catchphrase: "Your delivery has arrived" uses the established codes of home delivery applications. But instead of something tasty to eat, the visual shows waste stuck on a branch floating in the sea. The body copy reminds us that "36% of plastic waste is food waste". Home deliveries unfortunately do not end at our doorstep but often on the seabed.

In its fight for the preservation of the oceans, Surfrider Europe is once more sounding the alarm, highlighting the ecological emergency being caused by the increase in single-use waste pollution driven by the increase in take-out catering and home delivery.

Cyrielle Dufau of Surfrider Foundation Europe said:

"The aim of this new campaign is not to make consumers and catering players feel guilty, but to encourage them to adopt more responsible behaviors and make better choices in response to consumer trends that are harmful to the environment. It is about showing them that sustainable solutions exist, such as using reusable containers or deposit boxes. Alternatives to single-use do exist, and as ever, "the best waste is no waste!"

The campaign will initially be deployed on social networks and in the press: Le Parisien, l'Express, Surfer's journal, the Zù guide, Socialter, Salt magazine, Sup mag, Cameleon communication, Vivre le bassin, Digital mag and Society.
