Hip Hop Public Health (HHPH) is an internationally recognized 501c3 organization that harnesses the transformative power of music, art and science to implement culturally relevant, multimedia public health interventions designed to improve health literacy, inspire behavior change and promote health equity. Through a research-driven developmental process created by Columbia University Neurologist and Tenured Professor, Dr. Olajide Williams, HHPH works with socially conscious artists, creatives and public health experts to create scalable, highly engaging, culturally relevant music and multimedia "edutainment" tools. HHPH’s founding artist, the legendary Doug E. Fresh, has cultivated a unique artist advisory board including artists such as Darryl DMC McDaniels from Run DMC, Chuck D., Jordin Sparks and Ashanti in addition to multi-platinum music producers, composers and Emmy award winning children’s television writers. The HHPH transdisciplinary team, led by physical education veteran and public health leader Lori Rose Benson, is a unique collective blending artists and creatives along with health and education professionals, nutritionists, public health researchers, teachers, physicians, behavioral scientists, and a student advisory board. HHPH has created over 140 resources including music, videos, comic books, and guidance documents all available for free and accessible on HHPH’s online resource repository. To support K-12 schools, the resources are sortable by content type (health literacy, nutrition literacy, physical literacy, physical activity, mental health and wellness), media type, and grade level in addition to national health and physical education learning standards.
