Which Sports Have the Largest Brands?

Most businesses dream of building life-long relationships with their customers. Such connections are much more valuable than a continual churn of buyers who make one, or just a few, purchases before leaving for a competitor.

If you think about it, there are few businesses that we buy from for our entire lives. Even for basic essentials like groceries, you’ll often shop at the supermarket closest to your house, so whenever you move, you’ll switch to a new store. Few of us buy only one brand of car for our entire lives, often upgrading later in life when we’re more financially secure. And when it comes to restaurants and coffee shops, you might have a favorite for a while, but we typically change our “go-to” establishments every few months or years.

But when it comes to sports, most fans have a life-long relationship with their chosen club and league. In many cases, the team that they’ll support was decided before they were even born as it can often be a passion that is passed down through generations.

That means that, in many Western countries where the life expectancy is around 80 years, sports brands can expect to maintain a relationship with their customers for eight or more decades.

Some of these teams and leagues have turned this loyalty into multi-billion dollar, pound, and euro empires that stretch right across the world, well beyond their traditional geographic areas. Here are some of those that have been the most successful in this regard.

  • NFL - Dallas Cowboys

The NFL is the world’s wealthiest sports league, reaching revenues of $16 billion in 2019, despite playing far fewer games over a season than most other sports.

Within the NFL, the wealth is not split evenly with some teams earning considerably more than others. You might think that the teams that win the most are also the ones that are the most commercially successful, but that actually isn’t the case. The Dallas Cowboys are the most valuable team in both the NFL and the world, yet they haven’t won the Super Bowl since 1996.

The team generates around $1 billion of revenue each year and is worth about $5.5 billion, considerably more than the $150 million its current owner, Jerry Jones, paid for it back in 1989.

  • NBA - New York Knicks

This same principle applies in the NBA. The league itself generates almost $9 billion in revenue each year, equating to an average of $300 million for each of its teams. But punching above its weight in a financial sense is the New York Knicks, who turnover more than $420 million every season and are worth $4.6 billion. This is despite the fact that the team has only made it into the playoffs six times since 2000.

Basketball fans that want to bet on the sport are unlikely to favor the Knicks very often, especially given the fact that they’ve tended to lose more games than they play. Instead, fans taking advantage of the many promotions that NBA betting sites offer to them are likely to pick an opposing side. That said, it doesn’t tend to stop fans from heading to Madison Square Garden to watch the team play games.

It also doesn’t stop people from buying Knicks branded merchandise, even if they’re not big fans of the team or league. This is because the team has been very successful in building brand awareness and attracting tourists to make seeing a game one of the top things to do when visiting the Big Apple.

  • MLB - New York Yankees

Major League Baseball is another of the most valuable sports leagues in the world, with an annual revenue of over $10 billion. The New York Yankees have implemented a similar strategy to the Knicks, though they have also enjoyed more sporting success than their neighbor.

Each year, the Yankees rake in almost $700 million in sales and have grown to become worth around $5 billion, 568 times more than the Steinbrenners paid for the team back in 1973.

Much of this success can be attributed to the fact that the Yankees brand, especially its famous cap insignia, are famous right around the world.
